synopsis : : We were asked to create a monument in a roundabout that is the gate to Casalgrande, an area of Reggio Emilia with an outstanding ceramic production technology. We took the challenge of involving the ceramic tile as an architectural element itself, avoiding its conventional use as a mere cladding. Just after developing a new method to couple standard 60x120cm ceramic tiles into connectable panels, we could forsee possible ways to assembly them creating self-standing structures. Having in mind this was a roundabout, we designed this structure in a way that drivers would perceive it as a thin vertical line that, along the movement of the car, would gradually extend until revealing its whole length of 45 meters : : photos by M.
